This weekend has panned out to be pretty eventful, not only is my friend Katrina moving out of state, leaving Kyle and I with just Rob (and then there were three) but I tried my questionable vocal chords at karaoke. After staying out late with Katrina, Kyle, Brian, Rob, Lauren and Kevin Friday night at our local bar "Ye Olde Saloon, which ended with half of us climbing on a caterpillar and me falling on my ass, still on said caterpillar, Kyle and I slept in late on Saturday. We finally got going and manged to spend over 6 hours cleaning his car and attempting homework before heading out with our friend Dan for food before karaoke in Berkley.
Now how was I conned into singing in front of a room full of people? A small group that I barely knew as well as strangers of every shape and size? It all started a few weeks ago when the guys and I were at the Berkley Front, and we were pretty, ahem, inebriated. At some point I manged to strike up conversation with another lone female, in a pack of guys and I had played the Beach Boys "Don't worry baby" in the juke box. When Dan started singing along, said female suggested that we all go to a karaoke bar sometime in the future. Needless to say I left the bar with Rachel's number, we chatted via text message for the next week or so, and we made plans to sing.
Luckily I discovered via facebook that two of my friends were attending a "drunk karaoke" event in Berkley Saturday so naturally I asked if i could crash it and low and behold it happened. After Rachel graced everyone with a lovely cover of "Walking after midnight" by Patsy Cline, I had to hurry up and pick something. Of course I wanted a song that didn't require hitting any really high notes so I landed on "Pork and Beans" by Weezer (what else?). At first the wrong song started, so I had to stand awkwardly in front of the crowded room while the guy manning the equipment found my song, and then I had to actually sing. Apparently I was REALLY quiet so none made out the first verse very well, but eventually I sucked it up and became louder. It is safe to say that I didn't get booed or food thrown at me, a few people even asked me who the band was and I got high-fives on the way back to my table. The best part was when Kyle and Dan went to the bathroom together (dudes, only girls are supposed to do that) Rachel and I wrote all our names down and the four of us sang "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin. Not one of us knew the words but we jumped around and had a great time. There were other really good songs too, two guys did "Fuck her gently" by Tenacious D, and a tiny Asian couple did "Don't stop believing" and half of their group wound up on the floor singing with them. Needless to say, I am a fan of karaoke. I am all for trying new things this year, and I made a pretty good friend in the process.
