The music video of Rihanna's new single, "S&M," has been banned from broadcasting in 11 countries and radio stations rate the song unsuitable for minors.
After her last single “What’s My Name” helped her match Elvis Presley’s record on UK charts, Rihanna is now in high waters. On February 2nd, UK's Daily Mirror announced that the music video of Rihanna’s new single “S&M” from her album “Loud” has been banned from broadcasting in 11 countries. Moreover, YouTube has rated the sexy video as unsuitable for minors and BBC Radio 1 decided to only play the song after 7PM for its explicit lyrics.“S&M” by Rihanna
Released on January 21 by Def Jam Records as the fourth single from her latest album “Loud,” S&M has been making headlines for its explicit lyrics:Cos I may be bad
Sex in the air
I don’t care
I love the smell of it
But chains and whips excite me
(Rihanna “S&M” Loud Album, 2010)
The video clip, which premiered on February 1st, underlines even more the provoking lyrics of the song. Full of latex, whips, bondage gear, sex simulation, life-size dolls and banana sucking, the video has the perfect recipe for being banned from 11 countries and counting. Southern Asian countries were the first ones to ban the dirty video clip. Also, MTV is considering editing the music video and the song itself will not be broadcasted on BBC Radio 1 anytime before 7PM, unless they receive a much edited version.
Rihanna Reacts to her “S&M” Video Being Banned
As word spread that “S&M” video clip had been banned, Rihanna immediately twitted her fans defending her music. She asserted that the song has nothing to do with sex; rather it is about “metaphorical sex” (Ashleigh Rainbird, “Rihanna Causes Controversy with S&M video,” Daily Mirror 2/2/2011).
Rihanna also said she does not understand why her new video has been banned since she was completely nude in her video clip of Umbrella, covered only in silver spray: “They watched Umbrella ... I was full nude” (Rihanna's Twitter Page).
Also, Rihanna decided to post the explicit version of her video clip on her website, Rihannanow.com, as she explains on her Twitter page: “U can now view the S&M video on Rihannanow.com UNFLAGGED!!!" (Rihanna's Twitter Page).
“S&M” Video Get Banned
Rihanna’s new music video of her fourth single “S&M” has been banned from 11 countries and several music-related websites like YouTube have decided to rate the video as unsuitable for minors. Even if Rihanna has been trying to defend her video, it will be hard for her to convince radio stations and televisions to broadcast it if she will not provide them with a much edited version.Work Cited
