Certain films are a prerequisite for every hip-hop lover or a good amount of rap punchlines will fly over your head. A shortlist includes: "Coming to America," "Scarface,:" "New Jack City," "Boyz N The Hood," "Wild Style," "King of New York"—and apparently The Color Purple. Today, Nicki Minaj tested RapFix's knowledge of Oprah Winfrey and the Alice Walker novel-cum-Steven Spielberg film with her guest verse on Rihanna's leaked track "Raining Men."
"Excuse me, but who are you fixing to be, let them motherf---ers know there's plenty fish in the sea," she spits. "Don't be sweating me because I got the hottest ... Gimme dome, d-d-d-dome dome dome ... I ain't tripping on your money, Money long long long. Got my own TV production company, so tell Harpo to hit me, Celie."
Closing her verse—per what was leaked onto the web anyway, as the leak trails off it sounds like Nicki continues rhyming— Barbie mentioned the iconic 1985 film which starred Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Dannie Glover. "The Color Purple" follows a downtrodden woman who's abused by her husband but ultimately comes into her own. Minaj's line specifically references the abuse Oprah's character, Sophia, suffered at the hands of her husband Harpo, as well as the name of the talk show queen's production company, Harpo.
*Fun tip: a pre-"The Matrix" Lawrence Fishburne played a bit part in "The Color Purple" as well as "King of New York," which Mack Maine mentioned to describe the level of partying Lil Wayne's 'Welcome Home, Tunechi' party on Sunday would require.
