I love this photo so much that I had to use it as the subject for my long over due post on the meaning of Sf Independent Fashion. Why look up at the sky when there are pretty stars or animal shaped clouds? Why sing in the shower when no one is listening? Why go to indie fashion shows in San Francisco when no one is shopping, everyone is partying and we’re not taken seriously by the worlds’ major fashion markets? Because it’s art and it’s beautiful. There is so much creativity in San Francisco I just can’t even take it. It’s bursting at the seams (literally) and we don’t give a F**K what anyone thinks of us. We are making clothes, and we are wearing them after the shows, late at night and we are living in San Francisco. The term “mass production” is outside our realm. We are cutting edge and we have the photos to prove it. Recently I was directed to Wikipedia’s definition of the “hipster”. Summed up briefly it describes a contrived alterna culture of non conformists conforming to non conformity. I hate how snark and irony are seen as unique when a zillion other people are dressing the same, saying the same snide remarks, pretending to be poor while eating up their secretly large bank account balances. San Francisco Fashion doesn’t need to go around telling everyone how cool it is. It doesn’t need to conform to non conformity because it truly is non conformist. Shopping locally truly supports the designers, the creators, and reminds me of the indie punk rock scene in the eighties in Brittain. I don’t want to go off on another tangent. It’s not necessary. The Fashion Scene here is a mixture between art, culture, rebellion and creation. Ask anyone in this “scene” why they do it and they will all answer the same “because I love it too much not to.”.
People have often referred to my obsession with attending shows (which has slightly settled down in the past couple of months) as “work”.
“oh Michelle can’t go because she has to work at 11:00 at night on a Thursday.” They say.
Is this work for me? Are you F-ing serious? Hell no. Work implies labor for money. My obsession with the independent fashion scene in San Francisco spans so far beyond the reach of anything money can buy. I’m part of a movement. One that I am documenting in a book, and you can seriously take your nine to five and shove it. San Francisco Fashion has.
