Project: Motivation & Focus

I do own jackets and coats :)  Here is one that I recently picked up from the Salvation Army for $1.00 because it was part of a 5 for $5 green-tag sale. It is actually a large, so it is a little big on me, but I still really like it. The bangs are having one if their "whatever" days, lol.  Kyle took this outside of a building on Main Street in Royal Oak. He said that he would like to go with me to take more pictures around town sometime, especially when it gets warmer. He is pumped about the new camera, which we have not picked up yet.  He is still shopping around a little today and tomorrow, but has narrowed it down to two I think. lol.
Today really is kind of about a bunch of little projects. Cleaning, and organizing the apartment, homework, a few projects for school, a lot of reading...etc. I have always kind of been a bum about winter semester.  I think this semester has been the worse, I am really unmotivated. I typically am the type of person that likes to just tackle whatever needs to be done as soon as possible. Even if it mean sitting down for 11 hours at a paper.  I can't do that now, having a dog forces me to get up and take breaks. I have realized that this has been very helpful to me, so I have decided to split up my homework. Instead of doing it all on one night, I am splitting it up during the week.  I am also taking small breaks during homework nights too. Like after reading a few chapters, I walk Louie. After getting through 20 slides on power point, I do the dishes. I am finding that I am more productive that way. I did pretty well on my mid-terms and I think that was enough of a kick in my butt for motivation for the rest of the semester.

I have here a few tips that I pulled out of a Seventeen Magazine on studying for mid-terms. They are pretty simple, but I did use a few of them. Having friends in my class helped me figure out assignments better, and I always stay after for questions if I need to. (Something I wish I had done in HS).

#1: Your teacher is taking questions and essays for the midterm from the work that you've been doing for the last couple of weeks, which means that you have gone over it in class. Even if you don't have it written down, someone in your class does - ask around if there's something that you feel you've missed.

#2: Most teachers have office hours - and they do that for a reason! Professors like it when you go and talk to them, so definitely use them. Remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question, so ask away.

#3: Don't cram. If you know about a test or midterm in advance, start studying as soon as you can. Your brain gradually stores up info, so by taking an hour or so each night to look over some notes will definitely pay off the night before. Also, you need sleep before a test, so get some rest that night before!

#4: If you're given essay questions, you should really take the time to outline them and to get a good thesis. It might take a long time, or you don't usually use outlines, but if you have a really long essay it is really helpful to be able to go back and see what you were writing about in paragraph two when you're on paragraph fifteen.

#5: Try and form study groups with your classmates. It divides the work up so you don't have to go over everything by yourself, and its really helpful studying with people - just make sure that you ask people who will do their share of the work and won't slack off.

I hope that everyone is having a great weekend!!

FNF: Stubs

Tonight's Friday Night Feature was a little more challenging for me, but in a really good way. I got the chance to interview two of my friends, who are absolutely talented and extremely fun; Mike and Marc of Stubs. They took a hobby, movie watching, and from it created an extremely entertaining web series. The guys took the time to tell us about their series "Stubs" and also answer some questions for us. I have included a few of their episodes in this feature, to get a glimpse of how awesome Stubs is.

*Note: They have over 90 episodes between Stubs and their game-review web series "Level-up". I only posted a few of them here, but be sure to check out the rest.
Meet the guys:

Mike Seidl is a 24 year old film enthusiast, who is a full time editor.  He is currently working on a degree from Oakland Community College and believes the best way to go about learning is to do it.

Marc Bartsch is a 29 year old art lover.  He loves it all forms from written word, to comics and celluloid. His love of the obscure and the pursuit of knowledge keep him going.

Meet the company:

Duidl Productions (pronounced Do-Idle), was created in 2007 by Will Duff and Mike Seidl as the production company they would produce their films and shorts under.  They started with their student films; "Profile", "Customer Service", and "The Toque".

1) Where did the idea for Stubs come from, and who came up with it?

MB: Mike came up with it during D&D, while talking back and forth with friends about a web series. Will would review the movie, because originally Mike did not want to be behind the camera. [Mike: “no camera!”]  Others would partake but eventually Mike reviewed as well.

MS: We would see midnight movies and on the ride home we would back-talk each other about the film, we would be in hysterics just going back and forth on our views.  Will came up with the title “Stubs”.

MB:I originally hated the title, I said “No, I am NOT going to do a web series called ‘Stubs’!”  But one day I was lying in bed and thought how amazing this would be and I was just like: “Let’s go!”.

2) Is there a certain plan that you guys follow? Do you ever write out a script or practice before you film or is it more of a free-style approach?

MS & MB: we’ve tried. But the spontaneity just brings out something wonderful.

MS: We do have a layout, but we always have to cut out a lot, we will go on and on about an actor or go into a debate and then stop and start filming again. We do a lot of skits, so we might write one out-

MB: Like the beams in-and-out for the Star Trek episode.

MS: Skits are fun, We try to do them as often as we can but time, budget, and acting ability (neither of us are good at acting) make it hard.

3)What is the deciding factor on the movies and films you choose? Personal taste, recommendations, etc?

MS: I tell him what we are doing. (laughs)

MB: Yes of course we take recommendations!

MS& MB: We hear about movies from people, we check it out and we’ll go see it. That is how we did the episode on “Jennifer’s Body”, some one let us know on Twitter-and it wound up being one of our favorite skits.

4) How often do you film an episode of stubs, and how often do you see films?

MS: If I had it my way-right after the movie, in the theater. It usually takes a day or two though, we try to get them out as quickly as possible.

MB: Sometimes we go see a movie once a week, sometimes 2-3 weeks go by. It depends on the movie.

5) Which episode is your favorite so far and why?

MS: I hate everything, but I am my own worst critique. I keep thinking, “we’re not there yet” but I eventually have to stop and post the episode or it won’t get posted. We do have some great nuances, Marc’s facial expressions, there are camera tricks, comic references & jokes.

MB: The jokes, they can get old fast. But some stick for awhile. We sometimes try different ways to “name” Stubs. There was the Spider Man themed one on the “New Moon” episode; “The amazing , Spectacular, Sensational, Friendly Neighborhood & web of Stubs!”

6) What is your guys ultimate goal with Stubs? Do you want to make a career out of it, or make them just for fun?

MB: Yes. I would love to continue doing Stubs. At first I was a volunteer, I thought it would be a blast! But I really want to make it a career. Mike wants to do other things.

MS:  There is a lot that I would like to do, I am still on the production end, and I would like to do short-films as well as Stubs.

7) I have noticed that there are quite a few comments from fans on you tube, and that your episodes are pretty creative, do you guys use any feedback that you get from fans in your episodes? And what inspires the creativity behind each episode?

MS&MB: Yes, we do use feedback and we also try to use something funny in connection to the movie, like in “Jennifer’s Body”.

MS: We try to listen to feedback, the most people are willing to leave is usually “This is the best thing I have ever seen!” or “These guys don’t know shit.” On our ‘Halloween II’ episode, an anonymous viewer left this huge page-long commentary on how Stubs should have been filmed (He saw the film with us).
A lot of feedback helps shape Stubs, from the clothes we are wearing to formatting the show.

8) Are there any challenges that you come across while taping Stubs?

MS: Yes, mostly because we are filming in our friends attic. The lighting and the sound are always a challenge. Neither of us are very articulate, there are a lot of “um’s” and we stumble a lot. We also get off track.

MB: (laughs) yes we will get on each other on our views, or go off on something weird, then we will just crack-up. Mike will go “start again!”. There are times when I am sitting on the couch and there are tears just pouring down my face because I am laughing so hard!

9) Is there a specific genre of film that you guys prefer to review?

MB: Comic-comedies mostly. Sci-fi, (I am really geeky) but we try to go across the board with the films.

MS: Sci-fi, comedy, comic. I will watch anything, but I look forward to the comic and comedies.

10) Finally, what is up  next for stubs?

MS: Working on two Stubs right now,  looking forward to shutter Island.  We are also changing the set soon- it’s going to be slick.

MB: We are looking forward to the summer movie season, Iron Man II is a big one.

MS: Hollywood nights will be coming up again, it is 24 hours of straight movies for the Childrens Leukemia Foundation of Michigan.  We review right in the theater, Will and I are always running around trying to get everything done. It’s hectic and draining, but a lot of fun.”

I would like to thank Mike & Marc again for letting me conduct this interview and for sharing their work on my blog. If you would like to find out more about Stubs and Duidl Products, here are a few links:

Welcome back to where i'm going to have you.

I literally took this picture, right outside my apartment, and this is how it came out; really bright! So I took another pic and played around with it in my photo editor and then..nothing. This is the best that I could do.

It really just looks like I am glowing, lol. Even Louie is glowing :)  Anyways, the top was another thrifted one from Regeneration. It was $6, and the skirt was from Salvation army for $1.

I will never fall in love with you."

My band of choice today is Shiny Toy Guns. I Lurve them. I discovered them from a friend of mine, Clare, back when I worked at Best Buy. I bought the CD "We are pilots" right away and memorized all of the songs because I played it so much. My friends Dan, and Meridith liked them too, and being as though Kyle had no choice, we all went down the Magic Stick in Detroit to see them play. They rocked the place, and they even came out to sign autographs and take pictures with everyone. That was about three years ago.

*Mer and me @ magic stick-2007
*I actually took this one!!-sometimes, it's okay for guys to wear makeup :)

There music can be described as "Indie, rock, electronica."  I can't tell you my favorite song because I love everyone one on "we are pilots".  Carah Faye Charnow replaced original vocalist Ursula Vari – for the second album "Season of poison".  This originally bummed me out entirely when I found out. I still have not bought "Season of poison" because it was out on the back-burn for so long. Recently, I have been listening to them from their myspace and lastfm.com and I have to say that I might be getting a copy of it now. Just in time for me to get psyched about an EP they are releasing this summer :)

Let's take a loan out, put it down on a house in a place we've never been.

My outfit from yesterday, I am wearing my clearence rack booties! They are awesome! I stole this shirt from Kyle, my Dad bought it for him for Xmas this year and when he gave it to him, he said he grabbed it before he saw the back. Behold, shiny silver wings. Kyle does like the shirt, but I was getting bored with sweaters and wanted to wear something different. I can't wait until spring so I can wear all my dresses again without 12 layers on lol.
Today's Random post is about my puppy Louie, aka "The snow beast". I have never seen anyone, or anything that loves snow as much as him. He burries his face in it while on walks, he eats it, rolls around in it. It is the funniest thing.
I tried to bribe Louie with a big ball of snow so I could get Kyle to take his picture. Instead, he just tried to eat it out of my hands. He tried to cram that whole thing in his mouth! The next few pictures is all Kyle could get.

It looks like Louie is part rabbit. Although, Kyle did manage to get a few blurry ones, but I still think they are cute.
One of these days I will post some pictures of my Kitties Mary and Bary. If it looks like it was hard to capture Louie, the cats are worse.  They sit and stare at you all day with those cute saucer eyes, then when you go get the camera, they are no where to be found. I think they might be ninjas.

Last night was a blast! I saw some people that I have not seen in a long time, and I also got to meet some new awesome folks (including a fellow griz!). I am really feeling the winter break right now though, I have not really been motivated all week. Tonight however, I am cracking open the books, and doing some laundry. I hope everyone is having a great week!

In the winter it's a marshmallow world

This picture cracks me up! I think this has to be the most awkward one that I have taken yet! As Kyle was taking it, Louie was charging me from the other end of the driveway.  But it's great because this outfit was REALLY cozy. This was another cheap one too :)
But more importantly, look at all the snow!!! There was almost no snow left in the last outdoor picture I posted, which was from Saturday, this is Monday after I got home from work. It looks so pretty out, the trees in the park are all hunched over because of the snow, and they look like caves. Louie had a blast in the snow and I will be posting his pictures tomorrow, they are funny.
Today's post is not a writing one but a literature one; I had to post about the most hilarious book that I have seen in a very long time. It is called "FU Penguin!" By Matthew Gasteier. The intro is so awesome, he gives you some background on why he wrote the book, and it is an intro not to be skipped. He basically shows an image of a cute, adorable animal and then charges a full-on rant on how much the cute animal is an abomination to society. I borrowed the book from my friend Mariah, she had to buy it because my brother was in the store cracking up so bad that another customer said "I guess I have to read that book.". Mariah purchased it from Urban Outfitters, but I am sure you can find it at any bookstore or online.

Here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again, oh here it goes again.

While one or even two pictures would have easily sufficed here, I could not help posting all of these ones of my blue dress that I recently purchased at the Salvation Army for around $2-3 a few weeks ago. By itself, it sort-of looks like it could be pajamas lol, so I put on my skinny brown belt and made it look a little less like a night gown. I also am happy to show off the brown boots again, because ever since I bought the black ones, they have been all I have been wearing lately.
I wore this to dinner last night with Kyle's family. We celebrated his younger brother Chris's birthday, and since it was his birthday, it was up to him and his lovely wife Michelle to pick out a place for us all to eat. He picked a Cuban restaurant called  Cafe Habana , located in downtown Royal Oak (It is always awesome when we go out with them, they always pick someplace we have never been before, even if the place is two blocks from our apartment). Kyle and I split some fish taco's, and some arepas (corn meal cakes with goat cheese and yummyness)  Everything was delicious! We even got some churros with chocolate for desert. The prices weren't too bad either, which is always a plus. The place gets bonus points for me because my friend Alex from school works there, and it was a pleasant surprise to see her.

The entire weekend was pretty fun actually, after work on Friday, the boss and I headed to  Cliff Bells, just down the street from our work in Detroit. It has to be one of the prettiest bars I have ever been to, it is technically a jazz lounge, and it has some amazing woodwork, a pretty decent stage, an awesome bar and the bathrooms have powder rooms attached! The lighting is dim, so my camera would have been horrible in there, but next time we go I hope to have my new camera. I also have the chance to meet my best friend Jamie's new beau Friday night, he is a really cool guy, I can honestly say that I approve, (I usually hate every guy my friends date). We all headed to the Berkley Front to play some pool (I even got two in!!) I have yet to get Jamie to be on my team, she knows we will lose if I am on her team lol.
Saturday was pretty fun too, I did some homework in the morning that I had forgotten about at the last second, then after a nice walk with Louie, we met up with my brother and his girlfriend Mariah, and went bowling at a place by Kyle's work because he had some free bowling coupons. It was a lot of fun, we bowled five games, and I won two of them. Mark did so well that he bought one of the bowling balls and named it "lucky".

This week I am on break!! I have a TON to do as usual, but I am meeting up with some friends tomorrow night for a birthday. I am hoping to actually finish my to-do list this week, so here it goes, again. ;)

Project: Payoff

Wore this yesterday when it was beautiful outside for a few hours. You wouldn't tell by how it looks out there today, typical grey-cast sky. I usually forget to post pictures with my purses or jackets, well here is a bag that I just thirfted for $2.00. It's pretty big, and so far I like it. I found out that I need to go jacket shopping yesterday when the only ones I have are my winter coat, or a super thin jacket. I stole Kyle's hoodie when we went out lol.
Onto today's project :) Yesterday I finally got around to balancing my checkbook after my tax return. I have some credit card debt, and school loan debt and I am always trying to figure out which is the best way to pay everything off. I typically would divide up my money and just pay a bigger amount on the bill with the highest interest rate. When I got my return this year, I realized that I could play off a good chunk of my debt. I pondered the best option and then I came to a conclusion: Instead of paying off the highest interest first, pay off the bill with the lowest dollar amount first, then apply the money that I would normally use on that bill to the next one. For instance:

Bill:                       credit card                 school loan
Owe:                     $300.00                      $1000.00
monthly payment:  $50.00                        $100.00

Instead of paying $50.00 on the credit card, pay $100.00 then when it is paid off, put $150.00 toward the loan. It will then get paid off quicker because you will have more money paying on the debt. I am really excited about this because I figured out that the way that I had been paying on my debt was going to take me about 2.5 years to pay it all off. The way that I am paying it now, it should take about 14months. I guess that is really true if I use the money from the paid-off bill and apply that exact amount to the next bill.

Anyways, I am sorry if this post was a little boring, but I figured that someone else might want to take a stab at it.

FNF: The art of a Bodiatrist

Tonight's Friday Night Feature is one that is very exciting for me; the artwork of my brother's girlfriend, and my friend Mariah. We however, usually refer to her as "Bodiah" or when we are being more formal;"Bodiatrist". Mariah loves indie-rock, has a great sense of style, is terrific with a camera, and is an incredible artist. I am by no means an art expert. However, I have never seen anything like it before. it is very imaginative, as art typically is, but there is just something more. Mariah is currently pursuing her major in Fine Arts, but has taken the time to give me an interview and to share some of her artwork for this post. I present to you FNF: The art of a Bodiatrist.

*Bodiah!
When did you first start creating art?
-I’ve always enjoyed painting and drawing since I was little, but I never took it seriously until the 9th grade. Then I realized art was the path I wanted to go down for a future career.
If you could describe the style of art you make, what would it be?
-There isn’t really a particular style to my artwork; I work with all different kinds. But a majority of them are either surrealism or pop art.

What exactly inspires your work? And, are there any famous artists that have an influence on your own personal work?
-Most of my artwork is either an event or a dream that has really got to my attention. Salvador Dali is my favorite artist because his artwork is incredibly out there and matchless.

Is there anything that you have not tried yet that you would like to?
-I’ve always wanted to do a portrait using only black and white stamps on canvas. I have seen something similar to that form of work before only using candy wrappers and thought it was one of the coolest things.
When do you find is the best time for you to work? A specific time of day or is it spontaneous?
-Normally I like to do my art at nighttime. By then I am relaxed and not rushing or worrying about having to get somewhere.

What is your favorite piece that you have made and why?
-My Frank the Bunny painting from the movie “Donnie Darko” I think would be my favorite. That movie has always been on my list of top movies, and that painting was specially made for my boyfriend who enjoys the film as much as I do.
Is there anything that you are currently working on at the moment?
-There is an eerie picture taken in Berlin during WW2 of a sculpture called the Barmaley Fountain. The sculpture is a group of children dancing in a circle holding hands, but in the background there are burning buildings from when the Nazi troops invaded Berlin. Right now I am doing a painting of that using only a few dark colors.
 *my favorite
Finally, what is your ultimate goal for your artwork?
-My goal is to make artwork that people will consider unique. I try to not let my artwork appear dull or effortless, and I always look for a challenge in a piece that will build character and technique. Later down the road I hope to have some sort of career on art, but for now I still have a lot to learn.

I would like to thank Mariah again for taking the time to conduct this interview with me. With talent like hers, you can expect to see some follow-ups here on She is Sara.

Standing in the way of control

Today was Jury Duty...but not for me :) I did not get selected, which is for the best because both of the trials were during the week of finals. After we got out I went to the secretary of state and paid $45.00 to get my enhanced ID, fun, but they took a new picture for me, which is good because my current one is blond. After that I went shopping at Regeneration, a used clothing store in Pleasant Ridge, and I hope to be trying everything out by next week. I had some lunch with my little brother David and his friend, then went with my Mum to Payless and bought two pairs of shoes on clearance as well as some tights.
This outfit was from yesterday, and the top is actually a pajama shirt lol. It has clouds all over it and I got it for like $2.00 at Target a few years ago.

Well without any further ado, here is this weeks music feature: Gossip.
*Image from wordpress.com
Gossip (now without the "the") is a three-piece American rock band consisting of lead singer Beth Ditto, guitarist Brace Paine and drummer Hannah Blilie. The band first formed over ten years ago, but hit major success with their album "Standing in the way of control." I must admit that the title track "Standing in the way of control" was the first song that I heard by them, but I loved it and it has been on my Ipod shuffle ever since. Their sound has been described as "soul" or "gospel" but with a punk twist, experimental even. I love Beth's voice, it just strikes you from the beginning and is instantly recognizable after.  It has a sound that is both new and old and I am completely addicted.  Recently they released "Music For Men", this past June and are also going to be playing this year at Coachella. So for any of you luckies that are going this year, don't miss them!

It is also important to point out that front woman Beth is very open about her looks and her sexuality. Which I give her kudos for big time, she looks amazing and stands up for herself and does not conform to the "image" that most industries are looking for. She is an inspiration to Women everywhere.

Here is "Standing in the way of control", hope that you like it :)

Have you heard of Agent Orange?

The good news: Kyle ordered my visa gift cards and the should be in the mail shortly, then I can go get my new camera! The bad news: I am currently orange. This is my moo-moo(?) ! I love it because it is purple and it shocks everyone to know that I own an wear a moo-moo (I Googled it and I got "moo-moo" and "mu-mu").And I finally finished my paper, although I am not 100% on the outcome. I mean I wrote it, but I am not sure if it is exactly what the instructor wanted. Meh.
I also met with my instructor for my poetry workshop. I am doing pretty good in the class, although I do have to work on somethings. For instance, I suck at titles. We both agreed on that one. Also, she would like to see me take a little more risk with my poems, she said that I am getting there, that there has been a difference already in the poems that I submitted. I am forming my own style, which is realist and that I tend to start in a reality state of mind, even if it is dreamy (if that makes sense) then it goes into the core is the emotional content. I also need to work on the endings. Although she really liked "holes" a lot, which is the last poem I wrote, so maybe I am improving. lol.
Today's random feature however is these two lovelies:

These pictures were taken by Kyle at the Winter Blast on Saturday and I could not not post these guys! Actually, one was a girl, the top one. I forgot her name :( but they were both such sweeties! I hope everyone is having a good week so far!

Holes

I honestly cannot explain what was going through my mind during these photos. Except for that perhaps my afternoon caffeine might have kicked in during the last one. Currently, exactly half of my entire wardrobe is on my sofa. The sofa that is in plain view of the window for all of my neighbors to see. Seriously, they should come by and help me pick out my outfits or something. The big window is lovely, however it makes me feel like a damn goldfish at times.
Anyways, the cascading pile of laundry will stay there. Possibly until I get over my fight with Wallace Stevens. How dare he write such an enticing poem that I decided to conduct a five-page close reading on that was mostly me just repeating myself over and over. ugh. So moving onto this weeks poem!! Yay! I did not have workshop this week because of one-on-one counseling with our instructor so I am going to present to you my poem that I submitted for the motor city blog. (sorry for those who have already seen it) I am not sure if I am pleased with this poem or not. I did write it based off of a photo though, which I have become more attracted to this process now that I have done it. I may have to work more with this experiment. Enjoy!

Holes

Adorned with a pretty disaster
Forgotten in your face.
We scatter around in realization
That we have time, space.

If there is beauty in the forgotten
And if there are holes that lie,
The stranger will come around
