Saturday Kyle and I headed down to Corktown in Detroit for part of the day. I want to explore more areas around us because we are too broke to really travel. Even though it is not nearly as old as the city of Detroit, Corktown is the oldest neighborhood in Detroit. It is named Corktown because of all the Irish immigrants in the 1840's, and by the middle of the 19th century they became the largest ethnic group settling in Detroit.
Our first stop was Mudgies! A great sandwich/soup type place inside this historic building. The place was awesome, they panted the walls a soft orange color and they sell all kinds of Michigan made products. All of their food is made fresh to order and they get all of their products from Eastern Market. I didn't take any pics of the inside, because they had a lot of patrons and I thought it would be a little rude so I just took one of the building outside, which I thought was pretty cool. We ate outside too, it was perfect in the shade.
After we ate, we decided to bum around the neighborhood a little, and Kyle found a great spot for some outfit pic shots.
I saw this little building with pictures and a card stuck to the window so I stole the camera from Kyle to take a few pics.
Kyle took some pictures of the houses around the area as well, they were so hodge-podge and it was great. Some are in great shape, some are rundown, but there is a huge movement right now trying to get the houses bought, rented out and fixed up to try to restore the community. As of right now, it is one of the most artistic areas of the city.
We also stumbled upon a little record store and I was excited because the prices were pretty good. Kyle bought two records and then we left because we would have spend more money then we should.
After that we headed back to the car to get going but I had to take a pic of Kyle on the orange planter boxes, since orange is his favorite color :) Then Kyle snapped these last two pics of a really cool rail and a banana tree.
