The Indonesian Government will Encourage the Indonesian Handicrafts Industry

The Indonesian government will develop a Design Development Center (DDC) to boost state revenue from the sector of handicraft industry.

It was given the high market potential of handicraft products from Indonesia in the international. Based on the data gathered, handicraft industry could boost state revenues higher. Appropriate data, throughout the year 2007 handicraft products as part of a successful creative industries contributed Government revenue amounting to Rp 30 trillion.

DDC third to be built that is in Aceh, Kalimantan, Riau, and South Sulawesi. The plan was to boost the capacity of special design quality handicraft products. Development of design quality is important because it can determine the quality and competitiveness of products in both domestic and international markets.


Currently only two DDC namely in Bali and Cirebon. While in other places the concept is being prepared which will be in collaboration with the Faculty of Fine Arts Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB).

Indonesian handicrafts anda Furniture can meet the foreign market because it has a typical and unique ways that are not made in any country. In order to develop the design of handicrafts, the government also assisted the JETRO Japanese institutions, under Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJ-EPA).

JETRO has helped farmers in Yogyakarta in terms of product design and quality products if appropriate and practical to enter the Japanese market. The results are already there that exported products from Yogyakarta.

In addition, according to him, the government asked for help JETRO to give guidance to Indonesian craftsmen to create products that also meet the market specifications of other countries besides Japan. Meanwhile, JETRO party is committed to provide such guidance.
