Quinceanera Dresses: Balancing Traditional Styles with Modern Fashion

In Hispanic culture, one of the big events in a girl’s lifetime is Quinceanera. This happens when she turns fifteen years of age. The celebration has basically the same meaning as sweet sixteen parties in other cultures. It marks the end of childhood and the beginning of development toward womanhood, although girls aren’t considered women socially until the age of 21. This is an exciting event full of fun and festivities, with an extravagant dress to match.

The celebration, as well as the dress, is usually as elaborate as the family can afford. Despite the lighthearted feel it is a formal event, so long Quinceanera dresses are common. Of course, it’s up to the special girl to choose the length of her dress, but for a more traditional look a longer dress should be chosen.

When choosing a dress, the overall look should be womanly but modest. Since the point of a Quinceanera is to show the transition from childhood, avoid any dresses that look like something a very young girl would wear. The dress should highlight that the girl is growing up without seeming too adult.

Traditionally, Quinceanera dresses were white or other light colors. In the United States white is still used, but in other countries, white is a color reserved for brides and as such isn’t often seen at other kinds of events. Pastel colors are popular for Quinceanera dresses. Dark colors are rarely seen.

Quinceanera dresses have a traditional kind of fit as well. They tend to be form fitting around the upper body, above the waist. Then below the waist, they flow away from the body. The silhouette is slightly like that of a ball gown. This is a commonly seen shape, but girls with specific body types are free to choose a silhouette that works better for them. Shorter girls in particular may feel overwhelmed by the traditional full skirt.

The fabric of a Quinceanera dress is another important thing to think about, as with any kind of gown. There will be a lot of dancing and movement at the event, so the fabric should have enough stretch to give a full range of movement. It should also be something that doesn’t get too hot against the skin.

The last things to consider are the accessories. One Quinceanera tradition is to present the celebrating girl with a pair of heels to show that she’s becoming a woman. For girls who aren’t used to wearing heels, shorter is better. Tiaras are another popular accessory for this type of celebration.
