Remodeling your Kitchen

When you make the decision to remodel your kitchen, you are really on your way to a huge undertaking; one which will require tremendous amounts of patience and tolerance. A remodel of a kitchen is one of the most important remodel jobs you can do to raise the value of your home. If you are planning on staying there, it will certainly raise your level of enjoyment and comfort.

Whatever your reasons for deciding to remodel your kitchen, there are things you must do to prepare yourself for the project way ahead of hiring a contractor to do the job.

When remodeling your kitchen you must have an idea of what you want to be done. Here is where you can go so far as to have a professional draw up ideas for you, have an interior decorator come in and offer design ideas or just do it on your own based on magazines and publications and other friends and relatives houses. Having a solid idea of what you want remodel will keep the contractor on track and give him/her a more solid base of a quote for you on the remodel job.

Additionally, you must plan whether you are going to stay in the house or not while the remodeling is going on. Most people do, they just have to eat out every meal. So you must plan your budget accordingly.

Budget

Plan your budget that you have available to spend on the remodel job and stay within it. Include in this budget, as already mentioned, the cost of eating out every meal and the cost of clean-up that may be required when the job is complete. Hopefully the contractor will take care of that, but that is not always the case. Make sure that decision is made up front and put in writing when meeting with the contractor.

Selecting the Contractor

When selecting the contractor make sure and get lots of referrals. Places like Lowe's and Home Depot seem to do a good job but there are many hungry contractors out there who maybe can offer you a better deal and do just as high quality of a job. Make sure and get all estimates as solid prices. So really there not estimates but bottom line quotes. Get a time that the project will be completed in writing. Some contractors will work several jobs at once and not show up to your remodel job for days. Make sure you get in writing the date the job will be completed. Don't pay any money upfront. This writer made that mistake once and never saw the contractor again.

Make sure you get a plan of when they will be arriving in the mornings to when they will be leaving in the afternoon. Check references. Decide on a contractor and go with the job.

Completion

When the contractor says the job is complete, do look over everything making sure everything works correctly. Make sure the sink, the plumbing, the cabinet doors, everything is solid and works correctly. Then you can begin to enjoy your new kitchen!
