I love you, like Angus

I love you, like Angus

-Sara Astley
There is a tree we planted in the backyard.

Rubber-cold texture,
bight and yellow-- but not fake drops delicately
into an eager mouth awaiting. Reward the
coal-like comforting eyes that are curtained by the shag,
they never leave me.
Tiny paws and muscles arch up my legs, begging for more
And I give in.
The snout, the beard, the off-set of drool
adorning a teddy-bear body
bewildered and humble,
black and curly: Are elements of my past, my intimate fondness,
Angus.
Angus who kept feet warm, who was ungraceful,
who applied patience and a fat wet tongue.
The scent of a best friend lingers on my old pillow, still patient.

When my blue eyes clashed with your hazel, it was ungraceful.
And my coils of thread do not know how to provide delay,
but they
can recall your freckles,
your off-grin adorned with favorable spikes
alongside mine.
Your hand curls mitten-like around my own,
talking important
nonsense to my heart, with love-too tall
so you kiss my forehead, my favorite.

We mean well,
our bed is made up of old pillows
And last night I dreamed of a tree.
